Dominowa is a pioneering architectural studio that's dedicated to crafting the finest equestrian facilities. With a specialized focus on round pen designs, our expertise is recognized across Poland and Germany.

But before we dive into what makes our designs special, let's first define what a round pen is and why it's such a crucial component of the equestrian world.

What's a round pen?

A round pen or lunging pen is a training tool used in various equestrian disciplines. It is a circular enclosure with a minimum inner diameter of 18-20 meters, used for training and working with horses. Here are a few specific applications:

  • Gentle introduction of young horses: The round pen serves as an excellent space for initial training or tame a horse. Its shape encourages the horse to move around the trainer.

  • Exercise and conditioning: The round pen can also be used for lunging, which involves guiding the horse on a long line while it moves in a circular pattern with the trainer in the center. This can be part of conditioning, rehabilitation, or simply a way to release excess energy in the horse.

  • Behavior Correction: If a horse presents challenges, working in the round pen can be very helpful in addressing those difficulties. The design of the pen helps the horse focus on working with the trainer and building trust in their methods.

  • Trust Building: The round pen can be used to build a stronger bond and trust between the horse and trainer. Due to the limited space, it offers a safe environment where the horse and trainer can closely collaborate.

  • Safety: The round pen provides a confined and secure environment where trainers can work with horses, minimizing the risk of the horse escaping or engaging in dangerous behaviors.

Architecture of a round pen

Wood, being a natural and sustainable material, offers a range of benefits when used in equine architecture. Its warmth and organic feel create a calming atmosphere for the horses, helping to reduce stress and anxiety. Additionally, wood is durable and sturdy, providing a stable structure that can handle the rough conditions of horse activities.

To address the issue of light control and overheating, we incorporated wooden shutters into the design. These shutters are strategically placed around the perimeter of the round pen, allowing for adjustable light levels and optimal ventilation. By having the ability to regulate the amount of natural light entering the pen, we ensure that horses are not exposed to excessive glare, which can cause discomfort and impact their performance.

The wooden shutters also play a vital role in preventing overheating of the interior. During hot summer months, direct sunlight can elevate the temperature inside the pen, leading to discomfort and potential health risks for the horses.

Furthermore, the wooden shutters are carefully integrated into the overall architecture of the round pen, complementing the natural beauty of the wood construction. This harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetics creates a visually appealing space that not only benefits the horses but also provides a delightful environment for riders and trainers.

In our design of the round pen, we focused on enhancing training comfort and ensuring the safety of both the horse and rider. To achieve this, we designed the inner walls with a band with sloping angle. This thoughtful feature prevents any potential rubbing or discomfort that may occur when the horse or rider comes in contact with the board.

Lunging

Lunging a horse is a valuable training practice that brings many benefits to both the rider and the horse. This technique involves leading the horse on a long rein around the trainer, who holds a long lunge line.

This provides a list of key benefits associated with lunging a horse, like:

  • Building a bond: it provides an excellent opportunity to build a bond between the rider and the horse. Through direct contact and communication during training, the rider and horse have a chance to get to know each other better and understand one another. This bond translates into better harmony and trust during riding.

  • Developing fitness: it is an effective way to develop a horse's fitness. During lunge training, the horse moves at various speeds and performs different tasks, which helps build physical endurance. Regular lunging strengthens the horse's muscles, improves stamina, and overall fitness.

  • Training response to commands: it is also a great way to improve the horse's response to commands. Through precise commands and signals from the trainer, the horse learns to react and become more focused. This allows the rider to have better control over the horse during riding.

  • Preparing young horses: it is particularly important during the training and preparation of young horses. It helps them learn basic commands, understand fundamental principles, and develop balance and coordination. It is a crucial stage in building a solid foundation for future training and riding.

  • Rehabilitation and recovery: it is used for rehabilitation and recovery purposes. When a horse returns after an injury or a long break, lunging allows for gradual restoration of physical form and training without excessive strain.

The Montly Robert's method

Monty Roberts is known as the Horse Whisperer and has developed his own methods of working with horses. His approach, known as "Join-Up," is based on respecting the horse's psychological integrity and communicating with them in a way that is understandable to them. Monty Roberts' methods involve building trust, acknowledging the horse's natural instincts, and consistently applying gentle, non-violent training techniques. His approach aims to establish a harmonious relationship between humans and horses, understanding their behaviors and reactions, and achieving cooperation without the use of physical force. Monty Roberts' methods are widely utilized and highly regarded in the equestrian world, both for training purposes and therapy.

Working on the lunge line using Monty Roberts' methods is considered one of the best solutions for horses due to several significant factors.

Firstly, Monty Roberts' methods are based on understanding the natural behavior of horses and establishing a harmonious relationship with them. Through working on the lunge line, it is possible to build trust and communicate with the horse in a way that is natural and understandable to them. As a result, horses are more willing to cooperate, and their stress and uncertainty are minimized.

Secondly, working on the lunge line allows for the consolidation of basic skills and the development of good physical fitness in the horse. Exercises performed on the lunge line promote balance, flexibility, strength, and coordination in the horse. This, in turn, positively impacts their overall health, fitness, and readiness for further training.

Thirdly, Monty Roberts' methods focus on positive reinforcement and rewarding the horse for desired behavior rather than punishing mistakes. By consistently rewarding the horse for their effort and progress, a positive motivation for cooperation is built, encouraging further development.

Lastly, working on the lunge line in accordance with Monty Roberts' methods provides an opportunity to observe and evaluate the horse's progress and reactions to training. The trainer has direct contact with the horse and can adapt their approach to the individual needs and character of each specific horse. This is crucial for effective and safe training.
